Writing a Report on Your Work Experience Placement

Work experience should be fun and should give you a good understanding of the field your are allocated to. Your work experience may be in an area you have chosen or one that is allocated to you by someone else. You will probably do work experience as a student. Today, most students are asked to write a report on their work experience placement.
So, how should you do that? Firstly, be aware of any guidelines that are required to be followed. Usually your college or university will issue you with these guidelines and any structure that they want you to follow. It is important to follow these guidelines, as you will be assessed according to how well you fulfil these and you may even be allocated marks against this piece of writing, so it wise to take it seriously.
You could produce a report on your placement generally is an overview of what you have done during the placement and in relation to the organization you have worked in. Depending on where your placement was, you may need to ask permission from that particular company if you want to include any information about them.
There are a number of areas you can cover in your report. You could start by outlining some details on the organization you have been working in. For example:
• What is the nature of the organization? - healthcare, computing etc
• Organizational strengths and weaknesses
• How the organization communicates
• Ways in which the government impacts on the organization e.g. NHS
• Who are the main customers?
You could then outline your work in the organization. For example:
• How does the work you are doing fit in with the organization? E.g. healthcare assistant in the NHS
• Any experiences you had, positive or negative whilst working there - remember this is about experience!
• Communication channels with you and others
• Any efficiencies that could be introduced
• What impacted on you performing your job?
• What did you learn?
This report should be structured in a logical way and be easy to read.
Another way of presenting information on your work experience is through a learning diary or keeping a log. This could be simply recording what you have done on work experience and perhaps reflecting on this and what you learnt from it. This diary or log is a valuable way of gaining information that you may need when you come to write up a report on your placement. It is important to record events as they happen in your diary or log as this means you capture the emotional and 'real' experience at the time rather than trying to remember much later after the fact.
A diary or log can also be useful to demonstrate to your tutor the work you have undertaken and act as a record of events. It is up to you how you maintain this diary or log. You may wish to hand write it, type it on a computer or record it on tape. It is entirely up to you. Whichever way you choose, ensure it is safe and kept confidential as it may contain information about other people.
As with all academic pieces of writing ensure that you undertake a proofread before you submit. Check that spelling, grammar and punctuation are correct to ensure you do not loose vital marks!

The College Application Essay - Three Tips For Better Writing

When you write your college application essay, impressing the admissions officer with your charming personality and interesting subject material isn't your only objective. You also want to demonstrate that you are a good writer. Here are three tips that can help you improve the quality of your writing:
Avoid the Passive Voice: The passive voice lulls readers to sleep. That's the last thing you want to do. You want an admissions officer who reads your essay to be excited and engaged, not ready for a nap.
What is the passive voice? It is a particular type of inverted sentence structure. Any time you take the object of a sentence and turn it into the subject, you are writing in the passive voice. For example:
Active Voice Sentence: The College A Team improved Katie's college application essay.
Passive Voice Sentence: Katie's college application essay was improved by The College A Team.
Writing in the passive voice is not a grammatical error, but its slow cadence softens the impact of your essay. It is to be avoided by you... I mean.... You should avoid it.
Don't Use the Same Word Repeatedly: Words start to lose their potency if they're used over and over again. This is particularly true if you use the same word twice in the same sentence. Try to avoid this by mixing up your verbiage. For example:
Too Much Repetition: Stephen chose to attend Vassar because of its beautiful campus. The beautiful buildings nestled in the forest provided a beautiful setting for his studies.
Better: Stephen chose to attend Vassar because of its beautiful campus. The majestic buildings nestled in the forest provided a tranquil setting for his studies.
A thesaurus can help you avoid repetition, but use it as a memory jog, not as a word bank. Only use a word in your essay if you know what it means.
Vary the Length of Your Sentences: A paragraph full of five-word sentences is too choppy and a paragraph full of 50-word sentences only works for Charles Dickens and Henry James. A whole paragraph full of medium-length sentences won't work either. Mix up the length of your sentences to hold the interest of your reader. This is less important than some of our other pointers, but varying sentence length is the mark of a good writer.

7 Steps to Improve IELTS Exam Writing

Task one of the IELTS writing exam can be separated into two key types. Static tasks, which are tasks that have only one time period; and change over time tasks, which have two or more different time periods. Then, task one of the IELTS writing exam includes different types of charts, which should all be looked at to be well prepared. The most common ones are: tables, pie charts, bar charts, line graphs, process diagrams, and maps. Finally, with task one of the IELTS writing exam, you need to use different types of language depending on whether the task consists of numbers, percentages, or steps in a process. Therefore, there are three key dimensions of task one of the IELTS writing exam:
1. static or change over time
2. type of chart
3. numbers or percentages
Identify the Different Types of Task TWO in the IELTS Writing Exam
For task two of the IELTS writing exam the two key elements are the TOPIC and the TASK. In theory, the topic could be almost anything. Although many topics are on the following subjects: education, crime, society, media, transportation, environment, and technology. In addition, many of the past topics seem to be recycled, so if we look at many of the past topics that have come up in the exam, we have a reasonable chance that we will have thought about that particular topic.
Next comes the TASK. I have identified that the task is almost always one of the following three tasks: an argumentative essay, a both sides and opinion essay, or a two question essay. I have talked about these three essays at length on my website. I have observed that about 30% of candidates on any given exam day seem to fail to either understand the topic or identify the task. In this case many people are failing, not because of their English ability, but because of their poor IELTS ability, or ability to know how to respond to questions in the exam. Note that not only your task score will be lower if you don't respond closely to the task, it tends to affect everything. For instance, you might use a lot of academic vocabulary, but if it is off-topic you won't get the full value for it.
Step Two: Read Lots of Samples for Each of the Different Tasks
Reading samples of different IELTS tasks can help you appreciate the differences between each type of task as well as help you learn the language and structure that is required for each particular task. Not every sample will be an accurate response to the task, even if it is written by a native English user; so a little caution is needed. The key point is to read lots of different samples and learn from them. To read samples go to my website and click on the links under Task 1: academic report writing and Task 2: essay writing.
If you would like to practice your essay planning please join my blog or Facebook page, you can see the addresses for these in my author's PROFILE.
Step Three: Learn How to Structure your Report or Essay for Each of the Different Tasks
Structuring your tasks well is important to score well on one of the four key grading criteria Coherence and Cohesion. In addition, it also helps you score well on the other three grading criteria. Your Task Response score is enhanced because it is easier for the examiner to assess whether you have responded to the task and topic if you have structured your ideas logically. In addition, errors with vocabulary and grammar may be less serious if the examiner already knows your key point and therefore can guess what you mean, despite their being an error with language. In other words errors are more serious when the examiner is lost and has no understanding of what you are saying.
You can view the structure of the three main types of task two essays on my website.
Step Four: Practice Writing Each of the Different Tasks
In order to fully appreciate the different types of tasks in the IELTS writing exam you should practice writing as many different types as you can. This will help you remember the structure and language that you need to complete these tasks, help you improve your writing in general, and also alert you to any areas of uncertainty for completing the task. To illustrate this last point, imagine you are writing an argumentative essay and then you realize you don't know how to write the last paragraph. In this case you could read same samples or models and see how other authors completed these essays. In this case we should summarise our main arguments and then give our final opinion. We should also send a signal to the examiner that we are summarising our main arguments by starting the paragraph with words such as "In summary" or "In conclusion."
Step Five: Have Someone Check your Tasks
After writing your writing tasks it is best to try to get someone to read them and get some feedback. Most English learners don't seem to like to do this with their classmates, but I would say it has merits. Everyone has different areas of expertise and it can be a good learning exercise for students to check each other's writing. Another choice is to hire a private English tutor and get them to read your essays and give feedback. online editing IELTS essays service. I can correct your IELTS essays for a modest fee.
Step Six: Learn From the Feedback on your Tasks
If you do get your essays corrected by another student or a tutor, it is essential that you pay close attention to the feedback and learn from it. If you have made errors with the task response (for example you wrote an answer that was off topic) or you didn't structure it well, then you should think about what you did wrong in the planning of your essay. Perhaps you rushed to start the essay to quickly or just didn't read the question carefully.
Step Seven: Rewrite Tasks to Avoid Repeating the Same Errors
Sometimes, the best way to make sure you avoid repeating the same errors is to rewrite the same task, using the feedback from your marker to make sure that you are able to correctly produce a response to a particular type of question or task, before moving on to conquer the next type of task. This is especially true if your exam date is a long way off.

Essays on Outsourcing - What People Are Writing About Outsourcing

Outsourcing is a hot business topic and many essays on outsourcing have been written already. Some are critiques of this business strategy and points out the supposedly negative effects of the trend. The negative essays on outsourcing points out that it is "robbing" jobs from Western counties and transferring them to developing nations in the East.
These writings are actually telling the truth. Since outsourcing became prevalent, it is estimated that more than 4 million jobs have been moved from developed Western nations to developing ones in the East. The problem with these essays is that they do not provide the complete picture which will be discussed later on in this article.
Some of the negative things about outsourcing go as far as to say that the trend is to be blamed, either in small or big parts, to the economic crisis that is being felt by the United States and other major economies all over the world. It may be true that there are significantly less jobs in the U.S. and Europe nowadays because of outsourcing, it is neither right nor logical to blame it for the economic ills of the different nations. What people writing negative essays on outsourcing fail to realize is that outsourcing is actually helping business in the U.S, and other Western countries become competitive and grow despite the recession. It is estimated that companies that outsource were able to save as much as 70% of operations cost.
Companies are not the only ones that benefit from this tremendous savings. When companies save they are most likely to pass their savings to consumers in terms of lower prices of goods and services. When prices of goods and services are down, consumers are more likely to spend money when consumer spend money, the economy becomes healthy. This is the reason why many economist actually believe that outsourcing is good for the economy and why the trend should continue for years to come.
Now let us discuss the positive essays on outsourcing. If you will be able to read and hear what business owners are saying about outsourcing - how it has enabled them to save thousands of dollars, how it has streamlined their operations and how it has improved their organization's efficiency, then you will be convinced that outsourcing is indeed a blessing to businesses and the economy.
Companies that benefit much from outsourcing some or majority of all their business functions believe that the practice will be here to stay and will nit be just a passing trend as some people would like to believe. There are experts who believe that it is riskier for business individuals to avoid joining the outsourcing bandwagon than it is to participate in it. Organizations that resulted the trend found themselves behind their competitors and spending almost double than companies wise enough to recognize the winning strategy.
If you are a business owner then you will benefit greatly from reading essays on outsourcing especially the positive ones that will inspire you to take action.

Sample Graduate School Essays That Will Help You Get an Interview

Although the application process for admission to graduate school can really give you a tough time, this is not the sole purpose of all these admission requirements. What a university's admission committee wants to find out is if you have what it takes to survive and finish graduate studies. Of course, you have the results of the battery of tests and your transcript of records. Unfortunately, these are not sufficient on their own, especially since graduate school is not just a matter of aptitude but attitude as well. It's good that former professors and mentors at work can submit their recommendation forms to improve your chances. It's even better that an admission interview is part of the selection process, so you will be able to discuss your objectives more extensively. But before you get to that, you will have to submit an excellent graduate admission essay. It is advisable to read through a lot of sample graduate school essays to accomplish this.
What can sample graduate school essays do for you?
You may think that your writing abilities have enabled you to complete your bachelor's in flying colors and that you no longer need to read other students' sample graduate school essays. You may want to re-think that. Graduate school is an entirely different environment from college, and graduate school admission essays should go beyond the elements of style. Your essay should reflect your determination and suitability for graduate studies. For this reason, reading several essays should help you think of various ways that you can show the clarity of your personal and career development goals and your consistency in fulfilling these goals.
Where can you start looking?
If you're lucky, you may have friends who have successfully got into or completed their graduate programs. They could help you with your application by providing tips on what admission committees usually look for. They might even allow you to read the essays which they have submitted to give you a better idea. If you aren't that lucky, you can still access sample essays through the Internet. Choose the ones that are sure to catch and hold attention from the first line to the end.
What makes for a good essay?
As a statement of purpose, essays typically explain why you would want to get into graduate school. Make sure that you have the right reasons for wanting a master's degree or a PhD. The minimum or maximum number of pages or words for admission essays is often given, so you have to write one that is concise but comprehensive. Do your homework and research whatever you could find on the program and the university of your choice, so you can make a good match between your personal goals and their academic objectives. Cite personal experiences which can show how you deal with difficulties with a positive outlook. Be creative, and start with something catchy, such as a story that you grew up on. Relate how insights from the story or the values of a character shaped your goals the way they are now. It would also be great to write about social responsibility. After all, society should benefit from your graduate degree in the end.

Technical Writing - Writing a Test Case, A Simple Guide

One of the many skills required of the technical author is the ability to write test cases. What's a test case? During the product development phase sooner or later you need to understand if the product performs as it is expected to perform and if it doesn't what you will do about that.
So how do you develop your test cases? Here's a simple guide to outline the process.
Overall Description
Before you start you need a formal system to describe your challenges;
Reference Number - Particularly important in the case of complex products where there will be hundreds of unique tests
Name - Give each item a name that enables it to be easily referenced
Owner - Who is responsible for conducting the work
Full Description - What is it you will test? How will you test it? Don't forget when you do this that you need to test for human error in the process too, so if for example you're testing a database field that needs a numerical input, you should also try a negative number, text, random characters, and combinations thereof.
The Set Up Description
Here you'll describe how your test should be performed and under what conditions.
Environment - Where will you perform it and with what tools?
Pre-Requisites - Does anything need to be done to the environment prior to commencing the test? (To continue with the database example, do you have to load any data on to the platform before you start?)
Full Script - The precise step-by-step guide to how you will perform your case and what each action should be during the test.
Post-Test Activity - Is there anything you need to do once you've finished? (For example: delete that data from your server?)
Reporting
There are only two things you should need to report on:
Expected Results: What was the right output for your actions? If everything was working correctly, what would you expect to observe?
Actual Results: What really happened? Where there any other observations that you made during the process that were unexpected or unforeseen (or even just annoying)?
If you follow this basic outline you won't go far wrong when it comes to designing test cases, even if you've never had any experience before. For simple products there may be only a few documents generated for this process, but with complex tools like software packages there may be thousands of them, in these instances it's a good idea to develop a tracking tool to enable quick reference to progress in the testing cycle.
The experience you gain when working as part of a testing team is invaluable to your ability to develop final user documentation and the technical author should be pleased to be part of the process.
